Second Street Labs is a small research collective of statisticians and builders.

Based between Detroit and the Bay Area, we work at the intersection of civic technology, machine learning, and design.

All of our code is open.
All peer-reviewed work is published here.

We work exclusively with public and open data—starting from the structure of cities themselves and building models outward. When the work allows it, we treat analysis as a visual and cultural medium, not just a technical one.

Whether we're measuring urban complexity or building privacy-preserving systems, we build for our own cities first. By doing this carefully, we build for cities everywhere.
